Boiler Water Treatment

Introduction

Boiler Water Treatment

According to UK insurance statistics the boiler failure rate is about one per day. Common failures are:

  • non-operation of controls due to sludge accumulation
  • perforation of smoke tubes due to corrosion
  • overheating, distortion and even collapse of furnace tubes caused by scale or other deposits

All these can be avoided by correct water treatment and the water treatment of land boilers is clearly laid down in BS 2486 : 1997.

Reasons

Without considering costs due to catastrophic failure of steam raising plant there are significant costs associated with poor water treatment. These are due to excessive fuel usage, excessive blowdown, poor quality steam or poor quality feed water.
