Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

Introduction

Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

It is well known that the air we breathe has a direct effect on our performance and well being.

It has been acknowledged by a House of Commons Select Committee that "... There is considerable ignorance about Indoor Air Quality ..." (10 July 1991).

A number of forms of Respiratory Illness are linked to Indoor Air Quality and a range of Regulations are being introduced to combat this. The most notable are:

  • Workplace (Health & Safety Welfare) Regulations 1992
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999

They both recommend testing and maintenance as well as monitoring exposure.

Reasons

There are many reasons why organisations should monitor their Indoor Air Quality. They include:

  • Comply with the regulatory framework as presented above
  • A positive Human Resources strategy will have significant benefits in improved staff morale and reduced absenteeism
  • If the results of monitoring are acted upon, the image of both the building and the organisation can be enhanced in the eyes of both staff and clients.
