University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire now consists of three campuses within the North West of England namely Preston, Penrith and Carlisle. The university occupies a large number of buildings including halls of residence, academic teaching facilities, Laboratories and a number of sporting facilities open to staff, students, contractors and the public.

The University of Central Lancashire has its main campus in Preston with a student population of around 35,000 making it one of the largest universities in the UK. The Preston site was first established as an educational facility in 1828 when it was known as ‘The Institute for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge’. More recently the facility became Preston Polytechnic in 1973 and later Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984. In 1992 it was awarded University status and has continued to grow ever since.

The University of Central Lancashire is intent on controlling the risk of Legionella Bacteria being produced in the water systems within all buildings under the universities control in a manner that reduces the risk to staff, student, contractors and visitors from contracting Legionaries disease. In 2004 the University went to tender in order to outsource the expertise required to achieve their goal of controlling the risk from Legionella. H₂O Chemicals Ltd was awarded a three-year project and is now supplying UCLan with the following services within our Water Hygiene product offering;

Legionella risk Assessments of all sites

Cleaning and chlorination

Assisted site with compliance to the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8)

By developing the relationships between personnel and providing a high quality service the contract has continued to grow each year as the university has grown. H₂O chemicals has ensured that the control measures in place have meant that the university has both met and exceeded its goals in maintaining compliance to current regulations.

The University is now looking to renew its Legionella awareness and responsible persons training with H₂O Chemicals Ltd. The university also opted to extend our contract when the original contract expired.
