What we did

Britannia operate steam raising plant for the processing of fats. Due to restrictions in the raw water quality, namely very high natural alkalinity, a reverse osmosis plant was proposed and installed by H2O Chemicals Ltd in early 2010. A cost-benefit exercise confirmed that the pay back on the installation would be less than nine months. This was due mainly to the fuel savings on the boilers, but also reduced water and chemical usages on these and the cooling towers. The maximum permissible boiler cycles were typically five, based on the alkalinity restraints. The boiler blow down was reduced to negligible volumes following the installation. To compensate for the more aggressive nature of the reverse osmosis treated water, additional caustic dosing was fitted to the boiler feed to maintain controlled (but much lower) alkalinities. Corrosion monitoring was also installed on the cooling circuit to ensure that the treatment was effective.

What our client has said about us

Site engineer Andy Cowling commented:- “It is saving us money. I cannot quote specific figures as we installed a new vacuum system at the same time, but the combined gas reduction from RO and the new vacuum system is 40-45%”
